What is BS EN ISO 14341:2020 about?

This is an international standard that classifies the wire electrodes used in gas-shielded metal arc welding of non alloy and fine grain steels. It recognizes the two different approaches found in the global market, making BS EN ISO 14341:2020 a combined specification.

Who is BS EN ISO 14341:2020 for?

Organizations dealing with metal treatment and welding, probably in the oil and gas, automotive, aerospace and manufacturing industries. Specifically:

  • Welders specializing in gas metal-arc welding
  • Managers and contractors responsible for wire, consumable and welding electrodes

Why should you use BS EN ISO 14341:2020?

It specifies requirements for the classification of wire electrodes and weld deposits in the as-welded condition and in the post-weld heat-treated condition. This is for gas shielded metal arc welding of non alloy and fine grain steels with a minimum yield strength of up to 500 MPa or a minimum tensile strength of up to 570 MPa. One wire electrode can be tested and classified with different shielding gases.

BS EN ISO 14341:2020 is a combined specification. It provides classification using a system based on the yield strength and the average impact energy of 47 J of all-weld metal, or using a system based on the tensile strength and the average impact energy of 27 J of all-weld metal.

a)       Clauses and tables that carry the suffix letter “A” apply only to wire electrodes classified to the system based on the yield strength and the average impact energy of 47 J of all-weld metal in accordance with this document.

b)      Clauses and tables that carry the suffix letter “B” apply only to wire electrodes classified to the system based on the tensile strength and the average impact energy of 27 J of all-weld metal in accordance with this document.

c)       Clauses and tables that have neither the suffix letter “A” nor “B” apply to all wire electrodes classified in accordance with this document.

What’s new about BS EN ISO 14341:2020?

The 2011 standard was systematically reviewed. As a result in BS EN ISO 14341:2020:

a)       References have been updated throughout

b)      Table 3A has a new footnote

c)       Table 3B has been amended

d)      Wording in Clause 7 on the rounding procedure has been brought in line with current wording
