What is this standard about?

This is Part 3 in a series of five standards dealing with floor and wall tiling. This part provides recommendations for the design, installation and maintenance of ceramic and mosaic tiles.

Who is this standard for?

  • Architects
  • Designers
  • Contractors and specialist sub-contractors
  • Tile manufacturers and retailers

Why should you use this standard?

It gives recommendations on the choice of materials, application practices and, where appropriate, on the design of backgrounds and structural bases of ceramic and mosaic tiles.

It covers the design, installation and maintenance of such tiling, bedded on concrete, cement and sand and calcium sulfate-based screeds, timber, flooring grade asphalt and existing hard floor finishes in normal conditions.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS 5385-3 has been revised to make sure it meets the needs of the current market and that it aligns with other parts of the standard. Changes include:

  • Amendments to guidelines relating to installation on heated screeds and calcium sulfate screeds
  • Amendment to annex providing information on special conditions such as swimming pools and underfloor heated bases
