What is BS EN 12385-5:2021 about?
This is the fifth in a 10-part series of European safety standards on steel wire ropes for a variety of applications. BS EN 12385-5:2021 covers the particular hazards of using stranded steel wire ropes for specific lift applications.
Who is BS EN 12385-5:2021 for?
- Organizations that manufacture steel wire stranded ropes for lifts
- Organizations that manufacture or maintain passenger lifts
- Lift designers and architects
- Lift engineers
- Lift inspectors and regulators
Why should you use BS EN 12385-5:2021?
It specifies the particular materials, manufacturing and testing requirements for stranded ropes for suspension, compensating and governor duties for traction drive and hydraulic lifts moving between guides and similar applications.
It identifies the hazards that are specific to steel wire ropes for lifts, and that require action to reduce risk. It gives minimum breaking force values for the more common classes, sizes and grades of rope.
BS EN 12385-5:2021 also provides a means of complying with the essential safety requirements of the Lifts Directive and the Machinery Directive.
Organizations that manufacture or maintain passenger lifts are encouraged to conform to the requirements stated within the standard to be confident of satisfying essential health and safety requirements (the EHSR) as required by European law.
What’s new about BS EN 12385-5:2021?
This is a revision of BS EN 12385-5:2002 to fall in line with the European Lift Directive and thereby requirements relating to EHSR. BS EN 12385-5:2021 provides a means of complying with the essential safety requirements of the Lifts Directive and the Machinery Directive.
NOTE: This Part of this European Standard does not establish requirements for information for use other than those given in clause 7 of Part 1. Neither does it cover the requirements for ropes fitted with terminations.
BS EN 12385-5:2021 contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goal 9 on industry, innovation and infrastructure and Goal 11 on making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe and resilient. Specifically the standard supports lift safety.
