Abstract
This British Standard, a part of the BS 5395 series, gives recommendations for the design, construction and maintenance of straight stairs, including landings and winders, in various materials for building.
Information is given on regulations and relevant standards. Recommendations and guidance are given on arrows on drawings, safety, dimensions, accuracy, durability, materials and surface finishes, acoustics, lighting, constructional design, forms of construction, protection and painting, and cleaning and maintenance.
This British Standard does not apply to steps or stairs which are not connected to a building, for example, those which are part of the surrounding landscape or which provide entry to a property. This standard also does not apply to ramps, whether stepped or not, nor to ladders, nor to steps within swimming pools.
