What is this standard about?

The variety of UK gas meters has led to changes in the design of the meter boxes that house them. Consequently the market now comprises several distinct box designs which can cause difficulties for those involved in meter installation. This standard specifies requirements for gas meter box design in a bid to tackle some of the existing disparities and make meter installation easier.

Who is this standard for?

  • Gas meter box and meter bracket manufacturers
  • Meter asset managers
  • Gas transporters
  • Meter installers
  • Gas engineers and managers
  • Gas suppliers
  • Property developers and consultants

Why should you use this standard?

It specifies requirements for gas meter boxes for use with single gas meter installations that:

  • conform to BS 6400
  • are supplied with gases of the 2nd and 3rd family
  • have a maximum capacity of 6 m3/h
  • have a maximum operating pressure not exceeding 2 bar
  • incorporate any of the following meters: diaphragm, ultrasonic, credit or prepayment

It also specifies requirements for the design of the standard meter bracket.

NOTE: This standard does not apply to multiple meter installations installed in the same housing. Nor does it cover security shrouds intended to provide additional protection to meter installations.

What’s changed since the last update?

Spigot dimensions have been updated to allow the spigot to be tapered or stepped for manufacturing reasons over a possible length of 250 mm with a minimum diameter of 33 mm at the outlet. This update was made to suit the more variable needs of, in particular: new builds where wall thickness and thermal fillings are now up to 250 mm; and retrofitting with external thermal cladding.
