What is this standard about?

One in a series of international standards, this document sets out general rules for specifying and qualifying welding procedures for metallic materials.

Who is this standard for?

  • Engineers in the oil and gas, nuclear, marine, energy, aerospace and engineering sectors
  • Metal and sheet fabricators
  • Welding inspectors and related specialities

Why should you use this standard?

This is one in a series of standards that specify and qualify welding procedures. It defines general rules for specifying and qualifying metallic materials welding procedures. It also refers to several other standards giving detailed rules for specific applications and applies to manual, partly mechanized, fully mechanized and automatic welding.

Welding procedures are qualified by conforming to one or more welding procedure qualification records (WPQR). The use of a particular method of qualification is often a requirement of an application standard.

Welding procedures meet quality requirements by conforming to one or more welding procedure qualification method (WPQR). Application standards often require the use of a particular qualification method.

Annex A of the standard gives details of this series of standards, Annex B gives a flowchart for the use of these standards, and Annex C gives a flow diagram for the development and qualification of a WPS.

NOTE: It is assumed that welding procedure specifications are used in production by competent welders, qualified in accordance with the relevant part of ISO 9606 or by competent operators qualified in accordance with ISO 14732

What’s changed since the last update?

This standard replaces the 2003 version. It reflects changes to BS EN ISO 15612, updates section 3.9 on standard welding procedure, and updates section 6.5 on qualification based on standard welding procedure.
