What is this standard about?

BS 5656-3:2014 is the third part of a revised British Standard outlining safety regulations for escalators and moving walks.

Part 1 looks at the means of determining compliance with BS EN 115-1:2008+A1:2010. Part 2 is a code of practice on the selection, installation and location of new escalators and moving walks.

This part, Part 3, specifies how to comply with the provisions for examining, testing and recording related results specified in BS EN 115-1:2008+A1:2010 before these products are put into service.

Who is this standard for?

  • Escalator manufacturers
  • Escalator installers
  • Escalator service staff
  • Escalator consultants
  • Building services engineers
  • Building owners and managers

Why should you use this standard?

International Machinery Directives require that manufacturers of escalators and moving walkways ensure testing of their products before placing them into service or after any major modifications as clearly there is a risk of harm to users if either are installed or manufactured incorrectly.

BS 5656-3 gives the most up-to-date specifications on how to comply with the examination, testing and recording requirements as detailed in BS EN 115-1 before the products are put into operation.

What’s changed since the last update?

Together with BS 5656-1:2013, this part of BS 5656 supersedes BS 5656-1:1997, which is withdrawn.

NOTE: This part of BS 5656 is intended to be read in conjunction with BS EN 115-1:2008+A1:2010.
