What is BS EN 1088:1995+A2:2008?

The main objective of BS EN 1088:1995+A2:2008 is to help users comply with the essential safety requirements of the Machinery Directive and associated EFTA Regulations. Giving practical guidance to machine designers and writers of type C standards, this standard demonstrates how to design or select interlocks associated with machine guards to ensure equipment safety. These best-practice recommendations can also be used to control risks in the absence of type C standards for a particular machine.

How does it work?

BS EN 1088:1995+A2:2008 specifies interlocks, interlocking guards and guard locking devices that should be used to ensure occupational safety. It also looks at positive mode actuators and position detectors. Other topics include delay devices, designs that minimise defeat possibilities, environmental considerations, risk assessments, and performance considerations.

Who should buy it?

  • Machine designers
  • Writers of type C standards
  • Manufacturers of interlocks and machine guards
  • Product inspectors
  • Regulatory bodies
