What is BS EN 60825-1:2014+A11:2021 about?

This European standard is the first in a short series on laser product safety, where a laser product is any product or assembly of components that constitutes, incorporates or is intended to incorporate a laser or laser system. BS EN 60825-1:2014+A11:2021 classifies laser product equipment and gives requirements.

Who is BS EN 60825-1:2014+A11:2021 for?

  • Manufacturers of laser products
  • Laser product users
  • Employers with laser equipment on their premises
  • Laser safety advisors and consultants
  • Those responsible for laser safety training

Why should you use BS EN 60825-1:2014+A11:2021?

This standard describes requirements that are considered sufficient to achieve the required level of product safety for general laser products with respect to hazards to the eye and skin posed by laser radiation, provided that consumer laser products comply with BS EN 50689.

Also, that laser products classified as Class 1C comply with the respective applicable part of either the BS EN 60601 series or the BS EN 60335 series that contains requirements for the safe exposure of the skin (note that the exposure of the skin is not necessarily limited to the MPE values of the skin), if applicable, as well as specific requirements for the performance and testing of the safeguard that prevents hazardous emission towards the eye.

NOTE: Depending on the type of the product, laser products such as medical lasers, machines or toys can be required to conform to the applicable performance and testing requirements of other relevant product safety standards.

What’s new about BS EN 60825-1:2014+A11:2021?

This 2021 amendment deals with specific laser exposure conditions associated with multiple pulses and extended sources. BS EN 60825-1:2014+A11:2021 also gives updated guidance on lasers used as replacements for conventional light sources.

These amendments expand on the information contained in IEC Interpretation Sheets IEC 60825-1:2014/ISH1:2017 and IEC 60825-1:2014/ISH2:2017 and contain some additional text about how these changes relate to the EU Low Voltage Directive (LVD).
