What is this standard about?
BS 85600 provides recommendations and guidance on investigating floods and carrying out post-flood assessments. Guidance includes on investigating floods in accordance with the type and severity of flooding. It also gives recommendations on:
- thresholds for different levels of investigation
- the most useful information to collect
- the organisations to contact to supply or corroborate information
Who is this standard for?
In the public sector:
- Lead Local Flood Authorities (LLFAs)
- Local authority officers (flood risk, drainage)
- The Environment Agency to determine if the Flood Forecasting Service has worked/can be improved
In the private sector:
- Flood risk consultancies
- Academics
- Flood risk consultants
- Drainage consultants
It may also be of interest to the insurance industry facing claims from flood victims.
Why should you use this standard?
- Enables clear, consistent and good quality flood reporting, in particular for Lead Local Flood Authorities (LLFAs) and their contractors/consultants. Such reports will help authorities meet the requirements of the Flood and Water Management Act 2010.
- Allows users to avoid inconsistencies between local flood authorities and across risk management authorities. It can thus also enable data from different people and organizations to be combined to help build a bigger picture.
- Makes it easier to train staff to undertake work for multiple clients
- Will help inform future flood resistance and resilience measures
