What is BS EN ISO 29001:2020 about?

This international standard defines a quality management system for product and service supply organizations in the oil and gas sector. BS EN ISO 29001:2020 aims to ensure that relevant risk-based approaches are taken.

Who is BS EN ISO 29001:2020 for?

It applies to all organizations specifying and providing goods and services to the petroleum, petrochemical and natural gas industries, specifically:

  • Oil and gas operators
  • Exploration and development companies
  • Engineering contractors
  • Construction contractors
  • Service companies
  • Materials and equipment suppliers
  • Accreditation and certification bodies

Day-to-day users will likely be:

  • Engineering managers
  • Project managers
  • Production managers
  • Operations managers
  • Procurement managers
  • Integrity management leads
  • Quality assurance leads

Why should you use BS EN ISO 29001:2020?

It sets out requirements, guidance and tools that will help organizations specify and implement quality management processes, the aim of which is to reduce operating risk and drive improvement throughout a business and its supply chain.

ISO 9001:2015 introduced a step change to the way quality management systems are implemented across all industries. Organizations are now required to place far greater emphasis on the identification and management of risks associated with their activities and processes, and output products and services. As a result, quality management systems must include appropriate processes for identification and management of risk mitigation and opportunity realization. It also introduced a number of other key changes including the management of documented information.

ISO 29001:2020 supplements ISO 9001:2015 with requirements and guidance to manage risks associated with the oil and gas sector. It also provides a framework for aligning requirements with complementary standards and practices employed within the sector.

NOTE: This standard aligns with the International Association of Oil & Gas Producers’ initiated Joint Industry Programme 33 (IOGP JIP 33) to standardize the sector’s approach to supply chain specifications, reducing duplication and providing standardized risk based quality assurance processes.

What’s new about BS EN ISO 29001:2020?

This is a revision of DD CEN ISO/TS 29001:2011 as a full standard. It follows the high level structure of ISO 9001:2015 incorporating ISO 9001:2015 text entirely and unmodified; and giving supplementary sector requirements and guidance that will standardize the sector’s approach to implementing quality and verification requirements. Its use will help organizations:

- Manage supply chain risks and opportunities

-  Incorporate sector best practices

-  Incorporate sector risk management processes

-  Provide clarity on sector documented information requirements

Reflect the requirements and guidance within sector complementary quality, technical and conformity assessment standards/specifications
