What is this standard about?
This is Part 3 in a series of topic-specific British Standards written to complement the international occupational health and safety management system standard BS ISO 45001; and to supplement BS 45002-0 which supplies general guidance on implementing ISO 45001.
The guidance standards have been written in parts so that users can pick and choose the topics they particularly need help with. This part of BS 45002 covers OH&S accident and incident investigations.
Who is this standard for?
It’s suitable both for organizations working towards full compliance with ISO 45001 and those working towards that in stages, as well as users of OHSAS 18001, OHSAS 18002 and BS 18004.
It will be particularly useful to smaller organizations that do not have much experience and expertise in OH&S management.
Why should you use this standard?
It tackles the subject of OH&S accident and incident investigations in more depth than is provided in BS 45002-0. It will help organizations of all sizes and types to manage this specific aspect of ISO 45001 in a way that’s proportionate and reflects their situation.
Moreover the standard is intended to be accessible to anyone who needs to manage OH&S in the workplace. It’s written in plain English, so far as possible, and provides practical examples on how to meet the high level requirements in ISO 45001.
This standard was developed by UK experts directly involved in writing ISO 45001 and in collaboration with experts from the UK’s regulator, the Health and Safety Executive.
It can also act as a standalone document with which to systematically improve OH&S accident and incident investigations, whether or not users wish to implement ISO 45001.
