This Part of BS 1377 specifies procedures for the determination of the effective shear strength parameters for specimens of saturated soil which have been subjected to isotropic consolidation and then sheared in compression, under a constant confining pressure, by increasing the axial strain. The tests apply to specimens in the form of right cylinders of nominal diameters usually from 38 mm to approximately 100 mm and of a height approximately equal to twice the diameter.

This British Standard makes reference to BS 1377-1 for general requirements that are relevant to all Parts and for methods of preparation of soil and specimens for testing.
