What is BS EN 16114?

BS EN 16114 is a European standard that gives guidance on good practice in management consultancy.

It’s an easy-to-understand guidance document, written from the perspective of the service provider.

Why should I use it?

BS EN 16114 can help management consultancies:

  • Get better results from consultancy projects
  • Reduce project risk
  • More easily do business across borders
  • Build trust and support knowledge transfer

How does it work?

The standard gives a series of recommendations that covers the entire management consultancy process.

For example it sets out:

  • What should be included in a proposal
  • How to agree and adapt a work plan
  • How to manage risks during the project
  • What your obligations are at the end of a project

The standard is based on the research and experience of a wide range of management consultancies and their clients.

The standard recognizes that innovation and differentiation are important parts of a management consultancies value proposition. For this reason BS EN 16114 focuses only on outputs and outcomes, leaving consultancies free to use their own methods.

Who is it for?

BS EN 16114 will be useful to anyone involved in management consultancy, including:

  • large consulting firms;
  • small and/or one-man consultancies;
  • internal consultants; and
  • clients buying consultancy services

The standard is focussed on management consultancies as organizations and does not place requirements or obligations on individuals.

What are others saying?

“This new initiative provides a common language for Management Consultancy Services.  The Standard will enable managers get the best from their consultants, and provides a framework for consultants and their clients to work together effectively”.
