What is BS 3993:1966?

BS 3993 specifies two types of hydrochloric acid. The standard sets out the requirements for residue on evaporation, sulphated residue on ignition, total sulphate, iron, arsenic, lead, copper, mercury, oxidizing and reducing substances. It also looks at a variety of test methods.

How does it work?

BS 3993 first looks at the material – essentially a liquid solution of hydrogen chloride, HCI. This should be clear, ranging from completely colourless to pale yellow. The standard also provides best-practice recommendations for the material, and gives practical guidelines for the chemical analysis and testing by means of sampling. BS 3993 concludes with the packaging and sampling of commercial hydrochloric acid.

Who should buy it?

  • Chemical engineers
  • Occupational safety officers
  • Suppliers and distributors of commercial hydrochloric acid
