What is this standard about?

PAS 1616 provides the most up-to-date specification for clinical services, to help them deliver effective, affordable and consistent healthcare.

Who is this standard for?

NHS Trusts, clinical services and hospitals (known as ‘organizations’ in a clinical care context)

  • Commissioners of healthcare services regulators
  • Medical Royal Colleges

The specification will also be of interest to:

  • Health and Wellbeing Boards (HWB)
  • Health Education England (HEE)
  • Clinical services users (e.g. patients, their families and carers)

Why should you use this standard?

Clinical services can take many forms: from screening and vaccinations in schools to end-of-life care in specialist centres or in the home. Use of PAS 1616 provides structure and guidance to help clinical services meet the needs of patients, carers and families. The long-term aim is to raise standards and improve quality in hospitals and healthcare services.

This PAS is not intended to duplicate existing requirements or create unnecessary work. It aims to maximize quality and minimize risk within available resources to prevent or reduce the burden of disease, thus achieving good value care.

PAS 1616 also allows for the creation of suites of standardization documents that could work together, dealing with different, or more specific, aspects of healthcare. It can also be used in conjunction with other standards for specific clinical specialities.
