What is this standard about?

This international specification deals with callipers, one of the most basic, yet most important instruments used in manufacturing and mechanical engineering to measure external or internal dimensions. BS EN ISO 13385-1 covers the key design and metrological characteristics of callipers.

Who is this standard for?

Anyone needing a basic measuring instrument for inspecting and verifying products in manufacturing companies and engineering organizations. It will be used in many industrial sectors including:

  • Aerospace
  • Defence
  • Automotive
  • Nuclear
  • Rail

Why should you use this standard?

It specifies the most important design and metrological characteristics of all of the basic types of callipers including those with analogue indication: vernier scale or circular scale (dial), and those with digital indication: digital display.

This edition has clarified and modernized the main international requirements for callipers and includes MPEs – default values for maximum permissible error.

What’s changed since the last update?

This revision of the 2011 standard aims to make the document more useful to users. Specifically:

  • The figures have been updated to show more modern technology
  • General design characteristics have been removed and transferred to BS EN ISO 14978:2018, which is referenced throughout
  • Metrological characteristics have been clarified and modified
  • Requirements for test methods have been included
  • Default values for maximum permissible errors (MPEs) have been added

NOTE: BS EN ISO 14978:2018 should be used alongside BS EN ISO 13385-1:2019.
