What is BS EN 61508-7:2010?
Computer applications and systems – programmable electronic systems – are increasingly being used to perform safety functions. So it’s important that those responsible for making important decisions have the right guidance on all the safety aspects before reacting to a situation. BS EN 61508-7:2010 gives an overview of various techniques and measures to ensure the functional safety of electrical, electronic and programmable electronic safety devices. This generic approach is relevant to IEC 61508-2 and IEC 61508-3.
How does it work?
BS EN 61508 sets out all the requirements to implement the right techniques and measures for electrical, electronic and programmable electronic safety related systems. The standard looks at the control of random hardware failures and demonstrates how to avoid systematic failures. It also takes a probabilistic approach to determine software safety integrity and gives an overview of the techniques and measures for the design of ASICs. Other topics include recommendations for specific programming languages, system safety validation and functional safety assessments.
