What is this PAS about?
This is an internationally harmonized specification for assessing the competence and commitment of engineering professionals, based on the Engineering Council UK’s standard for professional engineering competence: UK-SPEC.
Who is this PAS for?
- All engineering industries
- Professional engineering institutions
- Regulators and licensing bodies, including organizations that regulate by statute or facilitate voluntary self-regulation
- National engineering accreditation authorities
- Individual engineering professionals
- Government agencies
- Employers
- Insurers
Why should you use this PAS?
It supplies a framework for assessing the competence and professional commitment of engineering professionals. The specification covers;
- The principles of a framework for assessing competence and commitment
- Definitions of competence and professional commitment
- Assessment of the competence and commitment of engineers in five areas:
- Use of engineering knowledge and understanding
- Design, development and solving engineering problems
- Responsibility, management and leadership
- Communication and interpersonal skills
- Personal commitment to professional standards
- Supporting guidance for implementation
The PAS describes differing categories of competence for the classification of professional engineers depending on the engineer's levels of knowledge, skills and responsibility and indicates pathways between the categories.
It’s expected that PAS 525 will be used internationally and other national engineering accreditation and licensing bodies will be encouraged to adopt the approach to meet their own local requirements.
NOTE: The PAS does not cover:
- Requirements that are specific to a particular engineering discipline
- Prescribed routes for attainment of knowledge and understanding
- Specific qualifications or levels of engineering qualifications
