What is BS 1722-2:2020 about?

This is the second in a multi-part series of British Standards on fencing. BS 1722-2:2020 covers the construction and installation of specific types of strained wire and wire mesh fences.

Who is BS 1722-2:2020 for?

  • Manufacturers of wire and wire mesh fencing, systems and components
  • Related trade associations
  • Installers including fixers, commissioning engineers, and health and safety managers
  • National and local government authorities with responsibility for security of site, land, construction etc., including specifying authorities and purchasers
  • Utility health and safety managers and maintenance personnel
  • Countryside management institutions
  • Farmers and agricultural fencing contractors

Why should you use BS 1722-2:2020?

This British Standard specifies requirements for the construction and installation of general pattern and dropper pattern strained wire fences, and rectangular wire mesh fences, including:

  • Mild steel or high tensile woven wire fencing
  • Welded mesh fencing
  • Hexagonal wire netting fences of the general pattern
  • Spring steel wire pattern fences where the mesh is fixed onto spring steel line wires

The standard provides a well-used, supportable and consistent framework for the installation and authorization of safe and suitable structures for perimeter and agricultural fencing. It covers modern installation techniques to provide for a minimum quality standard for the installation of this type of fencing and to ensure the safety of installers and operators.

Customers should use the revised standard to achieve consistency and confidence in the performance of their fences, to manage risk and to improve efficiency. In particular, governmental authorities, business and domestic purchasers will find that the standard provides for safe and effective products and operating regimes in line with other relevant standards and legal requirements. The standard is also used as a reference document for other standards in the BS 1722 series.

NOTE: This British Standard includes requirements for protective treatments. However, maintenance requirements of the fence after installation are outside the scope of this standard.

 What’s new about BS 1722-2:2020?

In the 14 years since BS 1722-2:2006 was published, technology, materials performance and fence installation techniques have advanced considerably. BS 1722-2:2020 reflects these advancements and brings all aspects of construction and installation up to date. Importantly this revision also switches the standard’s focus from being a “recipe” standard to a performance-based one.
