What is this standard about?

This part of BS EN 60079 gives the requirements for the construction, testing and performance of portable, transportable and fixed equipment for the detection and measurement of flammable gas or vapour concentrations with air.

Who is this standard for?

  • Underground mines
  • Oil & gas production and processing plants, onshore and offshore platforms, FPSO (Floating Production Storage Offloading vessels)• Oil and gas tankers, drilling ships
  • Oil refineries
  • Petrochemical and chemical processing plants
  • Gas pipelines and distribution centres• Re-fuelling stations or petrol stations
  • Surface coating industries
  • Sewerage treatment plants

Why should you use this standard?

Protecting equipment in explosive atmospheres can be lifesaving – this part of the series covers flammable gas detection equipment to indicate a potential explosion hazard and, in some cases, to initiate automatic or manual protective action.

BS EN 66079-29 applies to equipment, including the integral sampling systems of aspirated equipment to be used for commercial, industrial and non-residential safety applications, in explosive gas atmospheres. This is particularly relevant to mines susceptible to firedamp.

Part 29 supplements and modifies the general requirements of BS EN 60079-0.

What’s changed since the last update?

The addition of requirements for low range Group II LEL measuring equipment, and clarification / simplification of the methods for the 'time of response' test

  • Addition of visual and audible indication for portable equipment
  • Addition of requirements for fault indication below minimum voltage limit, sensor disconnection and zero drift condition
  • Addition of methane and propane or butane as required test gases for general purpose gas detector
  • Addition of requirement for semiconductor and catalytic sensors to be exposed to high gas concentration on response to different gases• Addition of temperature range and stabilization period
  • Addition of requirement for output functionality above the minimum supply voltage fault limit
