What is this PAS about?
The world’s oceans are increasingly subjected to illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing (IUU) that devastates the environment and endangers the livelihoods of those who fish legally and responsibly.
This PAS provides recommendations on how to check that seafood products being imported or processed within the EU are legally sourced.
Its use will also help importers and processors comply with the EU’s IUU regulations.
Who is this PAS for?
It will be used by:
- Importers and processors who are obliged to meet the requirements of the EU IUU Regulation. This includes the supply chains of seafood imported into and subsequently sold in the EU.
- Organizations involved in the seafood supply chain with an interest in improving or promoting legal sourcing, full chain traceability and decent working conditions
- Organizations trading products not covering by the EU IUU, such as pet food, which nevertheless want to source legally
- Competent authorities and others (e.g. NGOs, industry associations and certification bodies) seeking a benchmark for developing a due diligence system
Why should you use this PAS?
It sets out the information that importers and processors should request as part of a due diligence process for identifying and avoiding IUU seafood. As such it will help importers and processors to comply with EU Regulation 1005/2008 (‘the EU IUU Regulation’).
In addition the code will help users tackle ethical labour and traceability.
