What is this standard about?

It covers the technical rules that apply to the production of concrete for structures designed in accordance with BS EN 1992-1-1, the European standard on designing concrete structures. These rules apply whether the concrete is ready-mixed, site mixed, or used in pre-cast elements.

Who is this standard for?

It should be used by anyone on a construction project who provides or requires information on concrete, including:

  • Construction contractors, specialists and manufacturers
  • Specifiers and structural engineers

Why should you use this standard?

Part 1 provides five approaches for specifying concrete. They are:

  • Designated concretes
  • Designed concretes
  • Prescribed concretes
  • Standardized prescribed concretes
  • Proprietary concretes

Part 2 contains specifications for constituent materials and concrete.

What’s changed since the last update?

The 2016 Amendment has added to the number of clauses that refer to national provisions. Also a new annex – Annex M – provides more guidance on the national provisions.

NOTE 1: UK national provisions are found in BS 8500-1 and BS 8500-2.

NOTE 2: National departures from the standard, other than where stated in Annex M are not permitted.
