BS 8554 gives guidance on water sampling, specifically related to building services. It is a new standard drafted to provide recommendations for the facilities management profession, to better protect the built environment and its inhabitants.

Why should you use this standard?
A safe, clean water supply is essential to successfully running a building, protecting those living and/or working in it. Careful sampling and monitoring can prevent microbiological threats such as Legionella and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, as well as other chemical and microbiological threats.
BS 8554 gives recommendations for good water sampling practice. This includes commissioning, release for use and on-going management of hot and cold water services in buildings, with particular attention on how to:
- Plan and collect samples
- Select laboratory and on-site testing
- Take and maintain records
It provides a task specific process, providing facilities managers with the tools needed to avoid expensive conflict over contracts and litigation.
