What is BS 7121-2:2003?

This part of BS 7121 gives best-practice recommendations for the in-service inspection, thorough examination and testing of cranes and lifting equipment. It also looks at how these tests should be carried out to improve occupational safety. The standard gives practical guidance on safety measures that should be taken into account when performing tests in the UK. BS 7121-2 doesn’t apply to the mechanical testing of new cranes.

How does it work?

BS 7121-2 first refers to the personnel carrying out pre-use checks, in-service inspections and thorough examinations. The standard then explains periodic pre-use checks and in-service inspections, before focusing on testing as part of thorough examinations, and data logging. It also shares additional recommendations for cranes lifting persons and suspended baskets; mobile cranes; overhead travelling cranes; tower cranes; and loader cranes.

What is new?

BS 7121-2 replaces BS 7121-2:1991 which is now withdrawn.

Who should buy it?

  • Crane inspectors
  • Personnel carrying out checks and examinations on cranes
  • Occupational safety officers
  • Site inspectors
