What is PAS 14191:2020 about?

Within the digital built environment, there are a lot of disparate construction-related data dictionaries. This new PAS, which supplements BS EN ISO 23386:2020, aims to help create more standardization between dictionaries so they’re compatible with each other, and so that construction market data practices are more transparent and auditable.

Who is PAS 14191:2020 for?

Anyone in the built environment/construction industry responsible for managing the creation, acceptance, distribution, interoperability, and maintenance of structured information within construction-related data dictionaries.

Why should you use PAS 14191:2020?

Construction-related data dictionaries are currently very broad. This new PAS aims to help standardize them, thus:

  • Making the information digitally-available and machine-readable
  • Ensuring dictionaries can communicate with each other and synchronize their terms
  • Providing a single place to go for all construction-related terms
  • Leveling the playing field for those involved, without inhibiting technological innovation

The PAS specifies requirements for a management process for the creation, acceptance, distribution, interoperability, and maintenance of structured information within construction data dictionaries.

It covers the development, approval, and management of structured information within construction data dictionaries, such as data templates. It does not cover data dictionary ontologies or taxonomies.

PAS 14191:2020 also complements BS EN ISO 23386:2020. The international standard supplies general requirements for interconnected data dictionaries; this PAS adds to those concepts with a series of actionable steps and processes to fulfill those requirements.

NOTE: This PAS can be used for any construction data dictionaries, though it has been developed primarily to cover construction products data dictionaries. It’s intended for UK operation but can be used elsewhere.
