What is BS EN 1676:2020 about?

It specifies classifications, designations and grade requirements for alloyed aluminium ingots intended for remelting. BS EN 1676:2020 is a revision of the 2010 version of this standard.

Who is BS EN 1676:2020 for?

  • Casting
  • Engineering
  • Automotive and aerospace gearing
  • Designers
  • Architects

Why should you use BS EN 1676:2020?

This European standard defines requirements for grades of alloyed aluminium ingots intended for remelting, and specifies the classifications and designations that apply to these grades, the conditions in which they are produced, their properties and the marks by which they are identified.

Most aluminium in the UK is recycled, making it important that there’s a specification providing these guidelines. In addition:

  • The standard is designed to provide end-users with confidence in products
  • It helps aid the creation of better products
  • It levels the playing field between castors, producers and designers

What’s new about BS EN 1676:2020?

The standard was revised to bring it up-to-date with industry needs. In comparison with the 2010 version that it supersedes, the following significant changes were made to Table 1 on the chemical composition of ingots:

  1. Two alloys were deleted and six added
  2. The maximum limit for lead was reduced to 0,29 %
  3. Footnotes were added and modified
  4. The chemical composition limits of the alloys EN AB-43000 [EN AB-Al Si10Mg], EN AB-43300 [EN AB-Al Si9Mg] and EN AB-51300 [EN AB-AlMg5] were modified
