 What is PAS 6010:2020 about?

This is the first of three PASs written to increase the understanding and confident use of directed energy deposition (DED) additive manufacturing (AM): a type of industrial 3D printing in metal. PAS 6010:2020 specifies the wire to be used in wire-fed DED AM.

Who is PAS 6010:2020 for?

  • Wire suppliers
  • Wire material developers and manufacturers
  • DED machinery developers and manufacturers
  • DED users and DED component end-users

Why should you use PAS 6010:2020?

This PAS plugs a gap in the market for a specification covering the wire used in wire-fed directed energy deposition additive manufacturing (DED AM). It’s important to have a standard specific to DED AM, not welding.

PAS 6010:2020 provides requirements for the wire, covering dimensions and tolerances, cast/helix, surface condition, internal condition, marking, packaging, materials handling, storage, testing methods and some aspects of material composition.

It supports the production of wire to an appropriate quality for DED AM, that results in stable, uninterrupted builds and parts with desirable properties. It also supports the standardization and qualification of DED AM, and will help users accelerate innovation, enter new markets and increase trust in their outputs.

NOTE: This specification does not cover use conditions, for example, processing parameters. Nor does it purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
